A U.S. auction house has stopped the sale of a 16th-century manuscript linked to the Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes after researchers said it was probably stolen from the national archives of Mexico.

The Parisian gallery Cybèle is seeking reimbursement for an Egyptian stele that was seized last year in New York as part of a wide-ranging investigation into antiquities trafficking. The gallery is suing the Hamburg-based seller Nassifa el-Khoury, as well as a French auction house and its expert.

DALLAS – Homeland Security Investigations in Dallas, Texas, recovered a 19th century painting Wednesday that was stolen from the Abbey of Santa Maria in Sylvis in Sesto al Reghena, Italy, in May 2002. The painting called “the Assumption of the Virgin Mary” was created by Italian artist Giuseppe Pappini in August 1851.
